Equality and Diversity

The Equality Act came into force in October 2010.

The Act brings together over 116 seperate pieces of legislation into one single act.

The Equality Act 2010 provides protection from discrimination on the nine Protected Characteristics which are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Trans and Gender Reassignment
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership
  • Maternity, Paternity and Adoption
  • Race
  • Religion or Belief
  • Sex (Gender Equality)
  • Sexual Orientation

The University is committed to providing an equal, inclusive and diverse community for all members of it's community. We hope that you encountered this during your time at Warwick. Your background is an important part of who you are and can impact on your career planning in a number of ways. Here we will provide resources pertaining to a few of the protected characteristics aimed to support your decisions when deciding what information about your personal identity you want to disclose and share with potential employers.

Disability

Deciding to disclose the nature of your disability to an employer is a matter of personal choice. You are under no legal obligation to disclose a disability unless you wish to do so, and it is for you to choose the stage at which you wish to disclose.

Sexuality

Telling your employer or work colleagues about your sexual orientation is a personal decision. There's no right or wrong answer to the question: ‘Should I come out to a potential employer? And if so, when's the right time?’ Here are some resources for you to refer to to help inform your decision.

Criminal Record

If you have a criminal record, whatever the nature of the offence, you must think about:

  • who needs to know;
  • what you should tell them;
  • and how you can present yourself in a positive light.
  • See this FACT SHEET for more detail

Your strategy for finding a job will depend on whether the conviction is ‘spent’ (see the YourRights section) and the kind of work you wish to apply for.
