The right atrium of the heart receives blood from the systemic circuit before being pumped into the right ventricle. After being oxygenated by the lungs and entering the pulmonary circuit, it returns to the heart through the left atrium. In this process, the left side of the heart receives oxygen-depleted blood from the lungs and pumps it through arteries to the rest of the body, while the right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from veins and pumps it to the lungs for oxygenation.
