a set of lungs typically have 5 lobes, the right lobe having 3 and the left lung having 2. the left lung has only 2 lobes due to the space being taken up by the left side of the chest cavity by the heart. each lobe contains a lobar bronchus

superior lobe - has interior borders that extend posteriorly to the fourth rib for right and left

middle lobe - the smallest lobe of the right lung, which can be located between the oblique and horizontal fissures

inferior lobe - can be located below and behind the fissures,

cardiac notch - located between two lobes of the left lung and is present as a space for the apex of the heart

pleura - a serous membrane which can fold on itself to form a two-layered membranous sac. the outer layer (parietal pleura) connects to the rib cage
