anatomy

the liver can be located at the upper right section of the abdominal cavity, directly underneath the diaphragm. there are four anatomical lobes of the liver:

right lobe: larger than the left lobe, and is divided into 4 sections the anterior and posterior lobe separated by the right hepatic vein and the upper and lower lobe by the portal vein

left lobe: smaller and flattened than the right and can be located in the epigastric region of the abdomen. the top surface is moulded onto the diaphragm

caudate lobe: found deep within the liver facing from the inferior vena cava and is behind three hepatic veins

quadrate lobe: located on the inferior surface of right lobe.
