STUART BRAMBELL Core DAY OF THE DEAD, Aim: To develop students' skills in painting and sculpture within the context of cultural practice. Group: Year 8 at Rugby Free Secondary School. Learning: Students explored the cultural significance of the Mexican festival of the Day of the Dead and the imagery associated with it. They then selected an image of a celebrity as the basis for their mask, before making it out of clay. They developed their use of colour, applying cultural knowledge while fusing this with their own cultural and subcultural influences. This project was taught alongside the Spanish department, applying post-modernist and cross-curricular approaches to pedagogy. Pedagogy: How can teachers work in a cross-curricular way to increase students' cultural capital and global understanding?
